I would appreciate someones opinion on the Janome Memory Craft 4000.
I have the opportunity to purchase one that is approximately 5 years old. The machine hasn't been used too much and looks in good condition. I have tried it out and it seems to run OK - we don't have a local Janome dealer so can't get it checked out.

I do have a Janome presently (older model) but would like to upgrade - especially for the one step buttonhole feature.
I am also hesitant because it is a computerized machine.
Also what price should I expect to pay - 50% of original cost or something like that? This machine is in a sewing cabinet.

I think much depends on price because that machine is now older than 5 years i believe. It was followed by the 4800 and then the 4900...all similar but the newer ones just have more stitches. There is a Janome 4400 sold on the internet that is much like it also. I once owned the 4000 and it is a great machine. My only complaint was that it had to be coaxed over bulky seam intersections. I think it retailed for $850-$1000 but I paid $850 for mine. I really think used price at this point would be $350-ish. If you're getting the cabinet also that is very nice and worth a bit more. I am still using the cabinet that i bought from Sears for that machine. It fit in it prefectly bc it was similar to a model sears carried at the time. Speaking of Sears--they probably have a machine with all the same features of the 4000. At the time those were out, Sears sold twins that were virtually identical. You might want to check Sears if she is asking much more than $350? You'd then have a warranty and the ability to return it if it didn't suit you. Most of the machines in the $300 price range are made by Janome for Sears and probably will have the same or more features than the 4000. If price is the same, you might want to see what your $$ buys in new.
