Designing My New Space, Looking for Input (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952, Jacqui315)

Hey There!
I'm borrowing my mom's account today to generate info.
My husband has just decided that I'm going to get 2/3 of the upstairs in our new garage for WOMAN-Land. This is going to be a space 19 feet wide by 17 feet deep. The rear 10 feet (not included in the dimensions above) is for storage. In what will be my room, there will be a door and two four foot windows on the front wall. The rest is one big open space and there will be a door on the rear wall to access the storage area.
I'm so excited!!
Here's what I'm looking to fit into the space:
-a cutting / layout table that will double as crafting and scrapbooking space. This could be an island or peninsula. with cabinets underneath for storage.
-an area for a sewing maching and a serger, I don't own them yet, have always borrowed mom's up till now.
-space needs to be functional for the future possibility of quilting as well, don't want to take up quilting in a huge way but would like to make a couple of them.
-Space for painting eisel and canvases
-treadmill & tv
-office space for countertop and desktop computer as I work two days a week from home.
-hanging storage for costumes and clothes will be in the rear storage area.
-would like to eventually get a dress form, so need space for that too.
-ironing board area, would like to keep the board up.
Looking for ideas and thoughts, even layout ideas. As the space is entering the finnishing phaze this month. So I need to think of lighting and plug ins etc. Won't be furnishing and building the island etc for a few months.
Thanks, Let's have some fun!

Cassie, Ooh, what a wonderful space you will have! Love "Woman-Land!" I highly recommend the book "Dream Sewing Spaces" by Black. It will get you started with info on how to plan your space. Then take a look at this PR discussion where spaces large and small are included. And... for more eye candy and ideas, try this collection of sewing spaces.
My personal advice is to keep it fairly flexible because needs change over time. Pay attention to electrical outlet positioning and lighting. These two issues will help you tremendously. Put in more outlets AND circuits than you think you will ever need. Put lights where you use them.
Get out your graph paper and have fun designing your spot!

Hi Cassie: Congratulations you lucky girl! Your new Woman Land will be wonderful and so much fun to create. I got to do the same a few years ago when I turned our game room into my sewing suite. I quilt so I have two 4'x 8' sewing tables with lockable casters that can fit together for one super giant quilt layout space or push up against one wall for normal use. My sewing machine lift is installed in one of them and the legs were trimmed for my correct sewing height. They are wired with electrical outlets on each leg for plugging in various sewing machines and appliances. The long wall of my room was wired with electrical outlets every 2 feet, 12 inches off the floor so I can plug in anywhere in the room. My ironing board is a full size fold up model that is super easy to fold into the wall when not in use. My cutting table is a modular kitchen cabinet from Ikea with 16 drawers for thread storage and butcher block top that fits two cutting mats perfectly. We also added heavy duty casters to the legs so it can be moved easily when necessary and adjusted the legs for my correct cutting height. I agree the key to sucessful space is the ability to change it as your needs and interests change. I have various closets built in for storage and use antique armoires for storing my fabric stash. I use the space for my daily work outs and host sewing class for my friends, so mobile units work great for me. Don't forget good lighting and a great sound system to complete your dream retreat. Have a ball setting up your new girl room.
