Hey There!

I'm borrowing my mom's account today to generate info.

My husband has just decided that I'm going to get 2/3 of the upstairs in our new garage for WOMAN-Land. This is going to be a space 19 feet wide by 17 feet deep. The rear 10 feet (not included in the dimensions above) is for storage. In what will be my room, there will be a door and two four foot windows on the front wall. The rest is one big open space and there will be a door on the rear wall to access the storage area.

I'm so excited!!

Here's what I'm looking to fit into the space:
-a cutting / layout table that will double as crafting and scrapbooking space. This could be an island or peninsula. with cabinets underneath for storage.
-an area for a sewing maching and a serger, I don't own them yet, have always borrowed mom's up till now.
-space needs to be functional for the future possibility of quilting as well, don't want to take up quilting in a huge way but would like to make a couple of them.
-Space for painting eisel and canvases
-treadmill & tv
-office space for countertop and desktop computer as I work two days a week from home.
-hanging storage for costumes and clothes will be in the rear storage area.
-would like to eventually get a dress form, so need space for that too.
-ironing board area, would like to keep the board up.

Looking for ideas and thoughts, even layout ideas. As the space is entering the finnishing phaze this month. So I need to think of lighting and plug ins etc. Won't be furnishing and building the island etc for a few months.

Thanks, Let's have some fun!

Under the Sewing Tools & Techniques (or whatever it is called) caption, there is an entire thread going on about sewing rooms. Join us over there for pictures and other information.

You are one lucky girl!

Take a look at this thread... sewing room thread we have been talking about our existing rooms, not designing new ones, but there may be something useful for you there... There are lots of links to pics, and you can look at what has worked for others...

I did my room over a year ago, and am reworking it a bit now, not completely, but I need a better cutting space , and I thought I had worked it all out in my head... So, be prepared to waiver from your original plan if it is not working as you thought.

IKEA, IKEA, IKEA I hope you have one nearby, I do not know what I did without it... .

Good Luck with your new room...

How lucky are you!!!! I love my sewing room and it's barely 8x10. I would suggest that what ever type of cutting table you decide on, make sure it's a dropleaf. I have my Grandmother's old drop leaf dinning room table. This table sits flat against one wall in the room and I always keep one leaf open. I am able to raise and lower the leaves as I need them. Be careful putting any type of permanent storage units under the cutting table. You will find it hard to manuver around without bashing your toes on the cabinets. I keep my pattern drawers and scrap basket under my table. Also, If you can manage it, put your table on wheels. I really regret not being able to walk all the way around my table. To protect my table(because it is a table and not a cutting surface)I keep one of those cardboard cutting mats on top. You can purchase them at JoAnn's or Hancocks. My sons and Husband found a piece of butcherblock type countertop at Lowes some years ago, that fits along the opposite wall from the table. It's about 6 feet long. That is where I have my sewing machine. Husband build me a wonderful cabinet that goes underneath one end of it. Enjoy your Woman land...Mine is a retreat.

I suggest an ironing table rather than the standard ironing board. If I had the room I would make one of those. The sewing room thread had several.
