what to buy (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

I think I have narrowed down my decision to these two machines, Janome sew precise(250$) or Janome 7061NX(299$). I think I would really like the needle up down on the 7061NX, but there is hardly any information on this machine. I heard it was replaced by the magnolia 7330, which seems good. Anyone have a 7061Nx? What do you think?
I like the sew precise, but for only 50$ more the 7061NX seems to have a bit more options, but it's hard to say which is better. Help me out!

I prefer a machine that has a foot pressure control. I think that the Magnolia 7330 has a foot pressure control and according to the Janome website on it's stats also has box feed (like the new Juki's) which is a nice feature that I am unsure that the other models have.
Some of the Janome machines have the pressure control and some do not even though they have many nice other features. Janome mechanical machines have pressure control too like the Thread banger12. I believe the TB30 model also has it but I don't think that the Sew Precise or 7061NX have foot pressure control.
My local Hancock's store used to sell the 7061NX and I never really looked at it. It does have nice features but the foot pressure control is important to me.

I have looked at the Sew Precise, and it looked like a nice beginner machine. That being said, if I was shopping in that price range, I would go ahead and spend more to get the pressure foot adjustment, and the needle up/down. These are things you'll probably use alot.
The 7061NX looks like a better choice if you plan to have it for awhile.
Not to muddy up the waters anymore,
but you might also look at the Kenmore 19606, and 18231 at Sears They may be discontinuing them, so you might find a good deal. They are also offered under different numbers, and rebranded as Janomes on the internet. Both of those have pressure foot adjust and needle button, at about the price point you indicated.

This Brother PC210 on sale at SVD for $299 factory price has adjustable presser foot pressure, five styles of buttonholes, needle threader and programmable needle up/down. It's comparable to the other machines you listed in piercing power.
It includes free shipping. And I think, $299 is the final, total price.
This machine was impressive when I last test drove it. For the price, it can't be beat. Hope you snatch it before someone else does!

Or, there is the Kenmore 16231 for $250 at Sears online. Shipping is not included in the price, neither is tax. But it is eligible for store pick up.
The Kenmore 16231 has the features you want plus adjustable presser foot pressure and one automatic, bartack buttonhole. It's labeled as a "mechanical" machine, so you won't have to worry about any chips or motherboards going out. Routine maintenance and repairs for this machine should be cheaper than a computerized sewing machine.
The selection of presser feet would also be very reasonably priced.
I wouldn't place too much expectation from the Sears staff though. They probably would know more about a Kenmore washer/dryer than your sewing machine.

do you think there is any difference between a janome model and a kenmore janome model from sears? I'm a little leary of Sears and kenmores made by janome. Are they made cheaper because they are marketed at sears?

Perhaps a lift test could answer your question?
Compare how heavy the Janome is with the Kenmore. If the Kenmore feels lighter, my thinking is that its made of more plastics than the Janome.
Product details show that the Kenmore 16231 is 21 pounds.
I couldn't find the weight for the Janome Sew Price, but I think, the Janome Magnolia 7330 is the same machine. The Janome Magnolia 7330 is 18.2 pounds.
I really don't think Kenmores are any different to their Janome cousins in quality. But that's just my opinion...
I encourage you to test drive a few machines before you make a decision.

Wow, that is a great price for that Brother machine in the link you posted.
I have owned both Janome and Janome made Kenmore machines and I see no difference in quality but my Kenmore is a model that was discontinued just prior to the 19233 and 19606. I did notice that the materials of the head etc. are a bit different in newer models. I don't mean of lesser quality but different. To compare..my Kenmore 19365 Elite seems to be made of the same quality as my Janome Jem Silver anniversary model for the ASG. I think both were made about the same time.
I asked a Sears associate what makes a machine Elite. I was told Sears will sometimes "add" an extra feature to not only their sewing machines but also to their Kenmore major appliances and call them Elite models. So if the major applicance is made by Whirlpool it would be the same as the Whilrpool model but the Kenmore model might have an added feature.
So it appears that Sears does have their own specs for Kenmore while retaining the same quality as the models of the manufacturer.
