I had to make a vest for a new Santa costume with absolutely no idea how to do it. I took my 1982 men's size 38 vest pattern, View 3, and turned it into a ginormous size for unknown bodies to wear. My DH has been Santa for a few years using a costume from his "boss," and I just winged how much bigger to make this small sized pattern.
There was a coat to measure and a fake belly. I measured my DH with the belly and added a bit more for a larger wearer. I widened the shoulder seam a little, lowered the armhole a little for both larger arms and heavier shirts for cold weather, and added a bunch at the side seams. I added length to the front to cover the bigger belly and ties in the back to pull it however snug was needed.
I am not used to sewing such large sizes for my DH, so I was fairly pleased with how my grading efforts turned out. Being a costume, it didn't need to have a classic fit, but I didn't want it all warped looking, either. The one thing I was disappointed about was the curved look of the plaid. I don't know what I should have done to keep the lines balanced. That's probably not a technique I really need to learn at this point in time, but it would have been nicer done properly.
While it will mostly be worn under a coat, I wanted to make it look decent if the coat ever came off. I think it turned out looking fairly "official"!

It's supposed to look curved to emphasize Santa's famous feature.

Full tummy adjustment? Mind you people expect Santa to be curvy and the curved plaid sort of reinforces that. Might not look so cute with a straight plaid. I really like what you've done.

The curving is not a problem. The plaid matching is great. Well done.

This is fabulous, I even like the very slight curve, which looks intentional to me! Great job!
