I used the left over piece of my printed cotton canvas to whip up another foldable shopping bag.
I didn’t fully line this time, but drafted a deep facing instead to have a neat and durable finish on the opening and straps.
The construction order is otherwise the same. After burrito-sewing the handles, I just topstitched the facing down. Then on to french seaming the sides and the bottom.
Not lining the bottom part of the bag worked well for this sturdy home decoration canvas. The bag folds up nicely along the welt line and at the facing edge. All you have to do is to slide the folded up bottom through the opening, to keep the bundle together when you pop it into your purse.
The fabric came from my local Finnish textile company Finlayson co. I forgot to check the designer, but I have a hunch this is a reprint of their 1960’s fabric prints. (They used to manufacture the first Marimekko cotton fabrics back in the day.) The facing is black cotton lawn.

Thank you for posting your many versions of this bag. I somehow missed the previous ones, but so happy I saw this. Great tips on your methods. I pulled out various fabrics in my stash and will proceed with confidence!

These bags are really interesting. I looked at your first description - I am still intrigued by the bottom pleat formation! Might have to find a plastic bag somewhere and study it to figure it out! Love the way this folds up so handily!

Stylish and practical! I very much like your retro fabric; quality seems excellent; lovely colors and print. Forgot to say so when commenting on your baby blue back pack review!
